According to The Mirror’s live transfer blog on Friday (7:55am), Southampton are in pole position to sign Monaco striker Guido Carrillo after Premier League rivals Crystal Palace withdrew their interest.
Well, Saints have been heavily linked with the centre-forward over the course of the last week or so, and The Mirror says that the south coast outfit have launched a £15m bid for the 26-year-old, who played under Mauricio Pellegrino during the duo’s time with Argentine club Estudiantes.
The Mirror says that Southampton are willing to meet the player’s wage demands that are in excess of £50,000-a-week, which is something that Palace were unwilling to do as they also look to sign a new striker before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.
The report adds that Saints now have a clear run at the player, who has found some form for the Ligue 1 outfit in recent weeks.
The Argentine centre-forward has often played second fiddle to Radamel Falcao for Monaco, but he has been given more game time and is starting to find the net in recent times.
The 26-year-old scored a hat-trick in the 5-2 Coupe de France win against Moulins-Yzeure last week to take his tally to eight for the campaign, while he also netted against Troyes in Ligue 1 and Caen in the Coupe de la Ligue in December.
The fact that he has never been prolific during his career would certainly be a worry, but he would offer the height and physical stature that Saints are missing in the absence of the injured Charlie Austin.
The striker stands at 6ft 3in tall and is able to play the lone striker role effectively, something that Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long struggle with.
If Southampton could get him for £15m they would probably be happy, but there is certainly no guarantee that he would lead them to survival as they currently only lie above the relegation zone on goal difference.
