In Focus: Southampton have plenty of work to do to get Quincy Promes deal done

According to Russian media outlet, Southampton are only willing to spend €27m (£23.8m) on Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes before the January transfer window slams shut on Wednesday, with the Russian Premier League club demanding a figure nearer €35m (£30.8m).

What’s the word, then?

Well, Saints are keen to bring the 26-year-old Netherlands international to St Mary’s to boost their struggling side, who currently lie in the relegation zone and one point from safety ahead of their crucial top flight clash at home to Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday. indicates that the Dutchman has a release clause set at €30m (£26.4m), but seeing as Promes is entitled to 15% of that fee Spartak want £30.8m for him instead.

However, the report adds that the south coast outfit aren’t willing to splash out more than £23.8m on the attacker as things stand, with the clock ticking down to the deadline.

How has Promes done this season?

He has been brilliant.

The exciting forward has scored 15 goals and provided a further eight assists in 25 appearances in all competitions for the Russian Premier League club – with the majority of his outings coming from the left wing, although he can play in any of the positions across the front three.

The 26-year-old has been prolific during his time in Russia, scoring 58 goals in 115 games following a move from FC Twente – where he played with current Saints star Dusan Tadic – in 2014.

Will a move happen?

It’s difficult to say, but Saints are certainly running out of time.

Spartak certainly won’t want to lose their best player and will likely stick to the price they want for him, meaning it will be up to Southampton to either agree to their terms, or look elsewhere.

The indications are that the player is keen on the move and his record suggests he could make a big difference to the south coast outfit in their bid to avoid the drop in the coming months, and in that respect they must pay the money to get the deal done.
