According to reports in The Telegraph, Southampton are ready to step up their bid to sign Spartak Moscow forward Quincy Promes, who is available for around £30m and according to the Daily Mail is currently earning £7m-a-year (approximately £135,000-a-week) with the Russian Premier League side.
Well, The Telegraph says that Saints are in talks to bring Promes and Monaco striker Guido Carrillo to the club in a double deal that could be worth a combined £50m.
The south coast outfit have moved to sign the former after losing out to Everton in the race to sign Theo Walcott, with Sky Sports reporting on Friday that the Dutchman is keen to move to England.
However, the Daily Mail report that says the player is earning £135,000 before tax could prove to be an issue, and he could have to take a pay cut to secure a move to St Mary’s before the end of the month.
He has been in excellent form, and was named the Russia Premier League footballer of the year in 2017.
The 26-year-old has scored 15 goals and provided a further eight assists in 25 appearances in all competitions for Spartak this term – including two goals and two assists in five Champions League group stage appearances – while he has showcased the pace and strength that he has.
According to WhoScored.com, the forward has had 82 shots in 22 outings in Russia and in Europe’s elite club competition this season, while he has successfully completed 34 of the 69 dribbles he has attempted.
He would be a brilliant addition, and one that can help them get out of the relegation fight that they currently find themselves in.
The 26-year-old is quick, can assist and score goals and will scare opposition defenders – something that Saints haven’t done enough over the course of the last 18 months.
It’s difficult to say.
The reported £30m price tag would mean that Southampton would have to smash their transfer record to get Promes, but the board will also know the danger they currently find themselves in and how bringing the 26-year-old to St Mary’s this month could prove to be the difference between going down and staying up.
