In 2010/11 Southampton were playing League One football. Indeed, on the November 2 they hosted Dagenham & Redbridge, and on the night of that 4-0 win few would have predicted that in six years and day’s time the Saints would be beating Inter Milan in European action on the same pitch.
Alas, that was the case last night as the Hampshire club secured one of the biggest results in their history and really put into context their achievements in recent times. Granted, this Inter side is by no means one of the better ones in the Nerazzurri’s history, but to come back from being 0-1 down at half-time to secure a 2-1 victory is some going, especially as the Italians still boast top quality players such as Mauro Icardi and Ever Banega.
One man who was key for Southampton was Virgil van Dijk, who put in another epic showing at the back…
The Dutchman won 83% of his aerial duels, made 87% of his passes stick and managed to put in four interceptions and clearances across the 90 minutes, while also notching the all-important equalising goal.
The 25-year-old is quickly becoming one of English football’s top centre-backs and looks to be the latest gem polished by the Saints.
