Danny Ings has spoken to BBC Radio 5 Live about his chances of making Gareth Southgate's England squad for the upcoming European championships this summer.

The former Burnley man has been enjoying a rich vein of form throughout the current campaign, netting 14 Premier League goals in 22 appearances to help Southampton sit 12th on 28 points ahead of this weekend's game against Wolves.

It means that Ings is the second-highest goalscorer in England's top-flight, level with Marcus Rashford and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang while only Jamie Vardy has netted more goals.

Furthermore, Southgate's talisman Harry Kane could miss the tournament this summer after tearing his hamstring, further increasing Ings' chances of making the squad.

What did he say?

Ings told BBC Radio 5 Live: "It would be an unreal situation for me to be part of that elite group again. But for me, I'm never going to sit here and say I should be in the squad in March or for the Euros.

"I'm a realist and I know that it takes a lot of hard work and stats and all of those things and we have a lot of quality in this country, so for me, it's all about just giving myself the best chance that I can and try to do everything that I can each week to keep scoring goals and maintaining my form."

Catch 22 situation for Southampton

Presumably, the Saints would love to see their No.9 team up with Southgate and the England squad at a major international tournament - he would be the first Three Lions representative for the club since Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Luke Shaw went to the 2014 World Cup.

However, there is then a 'Catch 22' situation.

While it would be great to see Ings at the Euros, it would increase his workload and also increase the chances of him getting injured or seeing old fitness issues arise once again.

The former Liverpool man suffered a cruciate ligament injury in one knee while at Liverpool, and was then struck with severe cartilage damage in the other knee which saw him lose almost two years of his career to the treatment room.

Call yourself a Premier League expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

As of late - touch wood - he has been fit and firing, although a heavy summer in which his workload will be more than usual could pose problematic for a man with a colourful injury history.

It would be great to have a Southampton representative at the Euros, but is it worth the risk given his huge importance to Ralph Hasenhuttl?
