Ralph Hasenhuttl will no doubt be furious following his side's 3-2 defeat against Wolves on Saturday.

Southampton were 2-0 up at half-time and in the ascendancy, and they didn't even have to rely on Danny Ings to score either - Jan Bednarek and Shane Long getting themselves on the score-sheet instead. However, in the second half, their opponents put together an almighty comeback, eventually coming away with all three points.

Jack Stephens, the Saints' centre-back, had a torrid afternoon. Not only did he give away the penalty that allowed Raul Jimenez to equalise, but he was also partly to blame for the Mexico international's winner as well.

That wasn't the only aspect of his display that was disappointing either. He failed to make a single tackle or interception, and prevailed in just one of the three duels he took part in.

Whilst he may have played 15 games this term, including the previous 11 during which his side lost just three matches, many of the club's supporters believe that there is often a mistake in him, and they were not too surprised to see him make such an error on Saturday afternoon. Last February, Hasenhuttl himself publicly came out to defend the 25-year-old, insisting he has to "learn", and that they would "help him get better" to "stop these mistakes".

The 42 Premier League goals that the south coast side have conceded this season is better than just two teams - Aston Villa and Norwich, who both currently occupy a place in the drop zone. Clearly, the defence is an issue. Stephens clearly can't be replied upon, and in the long-term he needs replacing.

Step forward Mohammed Salisu. The Saints have been linked with the Real Valladolid centre-back, as have at least eight other clubs. There is clearly a lot of interest in the 20-year-old, who is part of a team that has conceded just 23 goals in La Liga this season - only five sides have shipped less. And as per Whoscored, the Ghanaian averages an impressive 1.4 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and five clearances per game in the Spanish top-flight. Quite crucially too, he hasn't committed a single error that has directly led to a goal this year.

With a reported price tag of just €12m (£10.2m) round his neck, he could very well be a bargain - that is not something you can often say in today's transfer market. Hasenhuttl has managed to turn around his team's fortunes recently after an awful start to the campaign, but things can change again very quickly. Salisu could bring that extra solidity at the back, and finally end their ongoing misery over Stephens.

Whilst the Austrian was to quick to back Stephens last season, the time has come for him to be ruthless on a player who the fans themselves appear to have lost confidence in. Bringing in Salisu to replace him may be the tonic they need to cure their defensive woes.

Meanwhile, Southampton fans react as this La Liga club eye two of their players.
