Southampton starlet Luke Shaw is delighted with the progress he has made this campaign and has already set his sights on next season.
The 17-year-old only made his Premier League debut in November but quickly established himself in the Saints first-team, making 28 appearances in all competitions throughout 2012/13.
It hasn’t always been plain sailing for the young full-back, who has also suffered a number of niggling injuries as he adapted to the rigours of the Premier League.
Those knocks have forced him to pull out of the England Under-21 squad on three occasions, with his latest withdrawal ruling him out of this summer’s European Under-21 Championships.
Despite missing out on international recognition, Shaw is determined to focus on the positives stemming from last campaign.
He has already set his sights on hitting the ground running when the Saints squad return for pre-season training in July.
“It was a very good season for me, especially with me being 17,” he told the club’s official website. “Making over 20 appearances in the Premier League is amazing, and hopefully I can come back in good shape for pre-season and keep my form up.
“Next season is going to be a new start for me. Last pre-season I came back in very bad shape, but I’ve spoken with the gaffer and the fitness coaches here and next season there’s going to be a new me.
“[This season] I picked up a few injuries and illnesses, and I think that may be down to what I eat, how I sleep and how I recover.
“In pre-season, there’s going to be a new me and hopefully that will change things.”
