Nick Powell certainly wasn’t the first and certainly won’t be the last promising young player who just couldn’t quite make the grade at Old Trafford. After being signed from Crewe as a teenager, the attacking midfielder just couldn’t force his way into the first team as injury problems, the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson and loan stints away stunted his chances at senior level.
It’s taken a move back to Wigan for Powell, once rated as the most exciting young footballer in the country, to truly rediscover his game. But an instrumental role in the Latics’ league-leading promotion bid this season, scoring eleven times in 24 appearances, could soon provide the 23-year-old with a route back to the Premier League according to TeamTalk – who claim Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Brom have all enquired into his services.
And if those three clubs were unsure whether Powell could make the jump up from the third tier back to the top flight, a truly majestic performance against West Ham in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup on Saturday may have just provided the evidence they needed. During a game in which the Irons, fielding youngsters in a weakened side, failed to turn up, it was Powell rather than any of the visitors who looked like a genuine Premier League player.
His impact on the match is highlighted in the statistics; although he wasn’t directly involved in either goal, the former England U21 had the second-most touches of the ball of any Wigan player, completed the third-most passes, took four shots at goal and completed three dribbles. But perhaps what will have impressed suitors more is Powell’s willingness to contribute off the ball as well – he made the joint-most tackles and the joint-most interceptions of any Latic. That combination of quality and industry is exactly what every Premier League clubs crave from their attacking players these days.
Of course, there isn’t much time left in the window to get a deal done. But valued at just £900k by Transfermarkt and now boasting a fine performance against Premier League opposition to accompany this season’s impressive form, Southampton, Palace or West Brom might just be tempted to take a punt before Wednesday’s deadline.
