Man United eyeing fifth summer signing, weekend talks held for Arsenal-linked star

Manchester United officials travelled to Southampton on the weekend to hold talks with the Hampshire club regarding Jose Fonte, according to reports from Record.

The 32-year-old centre-back, who has risen from League One to the Premier league with the Saints, has emerged as a target for the Red Devils in recent times amid claims that Jose Mourinho wants to add a commanding defender to his ranks.

Although ‘Mou’ has spent around £150m since his arrival at Old Trafford, £30m of which was paid out for Ivorian enforcer Eric Bailly, the Portuguese tactician remains unsure about his rearguard.

And reports emanating from Fonte’s homeland have revealed that Man United officials travelled to Southampton, who faced Watford on the opening weekend of the new season, on Saturday to talk about the experienced lynchpin.

It remains unclear as to whether the outcome of these discussions was positive or negative, but the well-travelled ex-Crystal Palace man may be tempted by a big move at this late stage of his career.

Arsenal have also been linked with Fonte.
