The Red Devils were hopeful that the France international, once dubbed by Jose Mourinho as the best young defender in the world, would seek a reunion with the Portuguese at Old Trafford this summer.
Despite the 23-year-old’s ever-growing reputation, he wasn’t first choice at the Bernabeu last season and it had been suggested that he could join United in search of regular first team football.
But Varane has now committed his future to the European champions, following crunch talks with Zinedine Zidane.
As quoted by Manchester Evening News, he said; “I talked with [Zidane] a lot and he trusts me so it’s one of the reasons I stayed. I made the decision to stay, the right decision.”
Accordingly, the regional newspaper claim the Red Devils are now set to accelerate their interest in Southampton captain Jose Fonte.
The Telegraph claim that although the Saints have offered the Euro 2016 winner a new contract to fend off United’s interest, they will likely accept transfer bids above the £10million mark.
