Covering Southampton's clash with Chelsea as part of Sky Sports News' Gilette Soccer Special on Wednesday evening, Matt Murray likened Yan Valery to two of the most exciting young right-backs in the Premier League right now, Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold and Crystal Palace man Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper noted how he was a big fan of the Saints academy graduate, and claimed the 19-year-old should be considered in the same manner as his English counterparts.

Since Alexander-Arnold broke into Jurgen Klopp’s side, the West Derby-born ace has gone on to record five senior international appearances and reach a TransferMarkt valuation of £40million. Wan-Bissaka, meanwhile, has been linked with a move to Everton as Seamus Coleman’s eventual successor.

On the night Murray watched Southampton take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the teenager recorded his eighth first-team game of the season – also his seventh start – and put in a shift to be admired.

Despite his tender age, Valery was able to contain Eden Hazard and keep the Belgian from breaching Angus Gunn’s goal line by winning five aerial duels and completing three successful tackles.

The Champigny-sur-Marne-born ace also intercepted the ball on four occasions, smashing his Premier League season tally that previously showed a single interception – coming against Manchester United in his side’s 2-2 draw on December 1.

Ralph Hasenhuttl will need his favoured right-back to perform in a similar manner when the league returns to action on January 12, as the Saints travel to Leicester following a brief interruption for the FA Cup.

Given his impressive form, should Hasenhuttl rest Valery in the FA Cup against Derby? Let us know in the poll below...
