Mauricio Pochettino has backed Southampton’s record signing Gaston Ramirez to make a big impact next season.
The 22-year-old Uruguayan, signed for £12million from Bologna last summer, has endured an inconsistent campaign in which he has contributed five Premier League goals in 26 appearances.
He was injured for a month shortly after he made a bright start, but has failed to hit the sustained run of form that Saints fans hoped for when he was signed.
Pochettino has backed Ramirez to do better next season and says that the price-tag was never an issue, and it was more about the player getting used to a new country.
Pochettino said: “The first season for any player is tough.
“I want to think it is just him struggling to adapt to a new country and language. I’m sure it has nothing to do with his price.”
The Argentine boss is hopeful that Ramirez will not get more than a three-match ban for red card he picked up against West Brom at the weekend.
He added: “I hope it’s not because that’s our season over.”
