Southampton may have turned a corner after recording back-to-back victories, but the Boxing Day win over Chelsea will feel more special as they won at Stamford Bridge without the prolific Danny Ings.
The striker was rested ahead of the weekend’s meeting with Crystal Palace but Ralph Hasenhuttl discovered that he has other players ready to step up to the plate.
Saints fans may have been surprised when they saw Che Adams and Michael Obafemi line-up at Stamford Bridge as the pair had just two Southampton goals between them prior to kick-off, and they would have been even more shocked when the latter found the back of the net.

19-year-old Obafemi took the ball superbly well before running at the Chelsea backline and curling a brilliant finish into the top corner, a goal which impressed and delighted supporters in equal measure.

Not sure how to pick 4 for MoTM. So many candidates! Obafemi chased everything scored a great goal. Che battled for everything. Armstrong is unreal. Prowsey tackled like he was peak Wanyama. The two centre backs won everything! #SaintsFC

Hasenhuttl’s bold changes paid off as the Saints continued to apply pressure. Adams once again came vitally close to his first goal for the club but Nathan Redmond’s squared ball was just out of reach, and the winger later doubled the score to send the travelling fans into raptures.
Obafemi will be eagerly anticipating more minutes on the pitch and after the qualities he showed, the forward shouldn’t have long to wait.
Calling all Premier League experts: Who do these unique statistics belong to? Find out below….
While some praised Obafemi’s well-taken strike, others hailed his overall skill and contribution, with one fan suggesting he is better than his strike partner.
-Stephens yet again looking calm and composed at the back.
-Hold up play from Adams has been decent.
-McCarthy did what he needed to do when called upon.
-Michael Obafemi is a baller.
This position is invaluable. Keep it up lads! 🙌🏻 #SaintsFC

Obafemi has to improve a lot of his game. But his pace and finishing is clearly immense. Looking forward to seeing more from him and hopefully puts in the effort to be a top #saintsfc player

To be fair I’ve never been a big fan of Obafemi today… always thought he worked hard but lacked quality
Was excellent today, put in the hard graft, held it up well, great finish
Looked a player today#SaintsFC

Elsewhere, Saints fans could have more to be excited about as a possible transfer signing has multiple qualities that would make him a good fit at the club.
