Opinion: Southampton must use Fiorentina interest in Gabbiadini to sign Jordan Veretout

According to Sky Italy, via Sky Sports, out-of-favour Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini is a target for Fiorentina during the January transfer window, and Saints should use the interest to bring midfielder Jordan Veretout the other way.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Italy international appears to be on his way out of St Mary’s in the New Year having failed to make the squad for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s previous two matches – both wins – in charge, with youngsters like Tyreke Johnson and Michael Obafemi preferred on the substitutes’ bench ahead of him.

Sky Italy, via Sky Sports, are reporting that Fiorentina are one of the Serie A clubs looking to bring the 27-year-old back to his home country, with teams in Spain and England also interested in a player who started his Southampton career on fire, but has struggled to replicate that form over the course of the previous 18 months or so.

The Viola’s interest may appeal to Gabbiadini in particular, as it would give him the chance to play for a big Serie A team despite generally struggling in English football.

Why should they try and get Veretout?

There is no doubt that if Southampton can do a deal with Fiorentina for Gabbiadini, they should try and bring the former Aston Villa man to St Mary’s.

The 25-year-old may have flopped at Villa Park – he only made 29 appearances before joining his current club on a permanent basis in 2017 – but he has largely shone in a defensive midfield position, and did so again as his side picked up a 1-0 victory against AC Milan at the San Siro on Saturday.

While Oriol Romeu impressed in the win against Huddersfield Town at the weekend, there is no doubt that Veretout would be an upgrade on the Spaniard in what is already clearly a key position in the starting XI of a Ralph Hasenhuttl team.
