Opinion: Southampton should make a move for Odion Ighalo

Southampton seem to have found their goalscoring form under new boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, but a January move for former Watford man Odion Ighalo could propel them clear of the relegation zone.

What’s the situation?

Saints beat high-flying Arsenal 3-2 last week before dispatching fellow strugglers Huddersfield 3-1 – a win that moved them three points clear of the relegation zone going into Christmas.

Liverpool loanee Danny Ings seems to be the main man under the new Austrian boss, and the 26-year-old has taken his tally for the season to eight goals with three in his last two games.

Southampton though have only scored 19 Premier League goals in total this season, and another striker should be considered a priority as Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini struggle for form.

Strike partnership

One goalscorer who could be available in January is Nigerian international Ighalo. The 29-year-old recently told the BBC that he did not plan on playing in the Chinese second division after his side Changchun Yatai were relegated from the Chinese Super League (CSL).

Ighalo moved east from Watford in January 2017, but he had previously scored an impressive 40 goals in 100 appearances for the Hornets during a loan spell and subsequent permanent move.

He has continued this form in China and finished this season as the CSL’s second top scorer with 21 goals. Given his experience, Ighalo could well form an effective partnership with Ings at St Mary’s and he could be a bargain signing at a time when goals are difficult to come by.
