Southampton have officially sold Manolo Gabbiadini to Sampdoria, and the Saints should strike while the iron is hot and sign the Serie A outfit’s promising young centre back – Joachim Andersen.

What's the word?

Reports this week claim Tottenham are eyeing a move for Andersen, but the Danish wonderkid would not get any significant playing time in North London, at least not until Toby Alderweireld leaves the club.

With Southampton still searching for a genuine solution to their revolving door of centre backs, they would be foolish not to try their luck with Sampdoria for Andersen.

The 22 year-old, valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, combines sturdy defending with elite composure and skill on the ball, and could have a similar impact at St. Mary’s as Virgil van Dijk did when he signed back in 2015.

Why would he be a good signing?

Ralph Hasenhuttl has switched things up at the back since arriving at the club, opting to use Jan Bednarek as part of a back three with Maya Yoshida and Jannik Vestergaard.

None of the current options have really impressed so far this season though, and Andersen is far superior on the ball to all of them, meaning Hasenhuttl could trust the youngster to play out from the back.

He is also excellent at reading the game, averaging just 1.1 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game this season, relatively low numbers due to the fact that he has usually snuffed out the attack before it has even begun.

Hassnhuttl seems intent on adding some attacking firepower this month, but a move for Andersen could prove to be a much more essential signing, and would see the club bank a tidy profit when the big guns come calling in a few years.
