Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg confirmed the signing of Marin Pongračić from RB Salzburg on a four-and-a-half year contract. What's the significance of this for Southampton?

Well, Ralph Hasenhuttl's side were believed to be interested in the Croatian centre-back, with Sky Sports describing him as a long-term target for the Saints.

It was even reported by Welt Fussball earlier this week that the 22-year-old was in discussions with a club 'from abroad' in regards to a move, while RB Salzburg Sporting Director Christoph Freund revealed it was 'possible' that the defender could leave this month - it now seems as if that club 'from abroad' was most likely VfL Wolfsburg.

The news means that Hasenhuttl must now start looking elsewhere, with just 15 days remaining of the transfer window.

Southampton's need for defensive reinforcements is clear, as they have conceded the third-most goals in the Premier League this season with 39 concessions in 22 outings, while Maya Yoshida's contract is set to expire in the summer and the club are also open to offers for another centre-back of theirs in Jannik Vestergaard.

Let's see how the Southampton fans on Twitter reacted to the news...

One supporter kicked off the discussion by saying "hang on" before stating that Pongračić was meant to be coming to a "proper team in the Premier League" - that is harsh on VfL Wolfsburg, who currently sit just six points off the Champions League places in the Bundesliga.

Elsewhere, 'E Biz' said that Pongračić moving to another club was "no big loss" - it seems as if this particular supporter wasn't too fussed by the news.

Meanwhile, Southampton page said that the Saints can "take him off your list" while Brendon expressed a desire to put the transfer setback behind him by saying "on to the next one".

Another fan with the username 'Not Papa Waigo' also seemed nonplussed by the news, asking Alex Crooks how a move for another target in Joakim Maehle is looking - safe to say Pongračić's move elsewhere isn't lingering in this supporter's mind.

Lastly, Bob Loblaw sounded quite pessimistic about Southampton's chances of signing anyone this month - there are still 15 days remaining of the window, although the Saints do need to get moving.
