According to reports in The Telegraph, Southampton attacker Dusan Tadic is closing in on a move to Dutch giants Ajax after telling the south coast outfit that he wants to leave the club this summer.
The Telegraph report that Saints, whose fans are unimpressed with a transfer link to a 55-cap international, are negotiating a fee for the 29-year-old, who scored three goals in his side’s final six Premier League matches last term to help them avoid relegation to the Championship.
Despite his fine form during that period, in general he has struggled in the previous two seasons following a strong first couple of years at St Mary’s, and manager Mark Hughes may be looking to freshen things up this summer with his side scoring just 37 goals in their 38 top flight matches in 2017/18.
So, how would selling the Serbian truly impact Saints? Football FanCast take a look at the potential consequences of the major summer deal for Southampton…
While The Telegraph report that Tadic is keen to leave Southampton after four years at St Mary’s, it doesn’t appear as though the south coast outfit are doing much to convince him to stay.
It could all be part of Mark Hughes trying to make a fresh start and stamping his own mark on the squad, and following two consecutive disappointing seasons the Welshman may feel that it is time to freshen things up, and that includes waving goodbye to long-serving players like Tadic.
Hughes will want this side to be his, and it is something that he perhaps needs to do to ensure they don’t find themselves in a relegation trouble again in 2018/19.
If Southampton do sell Tadic in the coming days or weeks, you can be sure that Hughes will want to bring a top-class replacement for the Serbian given he has been one of their most creative and influential players in the final third for them since 2014.
One option he has already been linked with and a player he knows well is Stoke City’s Shaqiri, who he signed for the Potters in 2016 and is available for £12m this summer thanks to a release clause in his contract following their relegation to the Championship, as per The Mirror.
The 26-year-old would certainly fill the void left by Tadic as shown by the fact he scored eight goals and provided a further seven assists in 36 Premier League outings last term.
The 22-year-old Southampton academy graduate looked to be in for a bright future at St Mary’s when he scored in a League Cup match against Crystal Palace in 2016, but he has struggled to make an impact since with injury certainly affecting him.
The departure of Tadic would likely be a final opportunity to impress for the attacking midfielder, but with Hughes likely to add at least one, and perhaps even two players in that position this summer, it seems more and more likely that Hesketh will be sold seeing as he is 22 and is nowhere near proving he is good enough for a first-team spot at this level.
