Southampton boss Claude Puel has credited the Saints’ historic victory over Inter Milan last night in the Europa League to the club’s loyal supporters, who he believes deserved the result.
The Hampshire side came from a goal behind to secure all three points, giving them a cushion in the standings over last night’s opponents, and Puel told the club’s official website that the victory was what the fans deserved.
Southampton fans travelled in their thousands to watch the side narrowly fall to a defeat against Inter Milan at the San Siro but last night’s victory on the South Coast was the perfect response:
“It was important also that the fans were rewarded, because they came for the first one against Inter in their thousands and it was important to win this game for them,
“It was a fantastic atmosphere, and it was important for my players to have this great support. It was a fantastic atmosphere and we will want to know this for the future.”
The result edges Southampton closer to the knock-out stages in the Europa League, with the Saints knowing they’ll seal their spot if they can maintain their gap over Hapoel Be’er Sheva and Inter, who trail them by three and four points respectively.
Southampton have won just three of their last eight matches in all competition and sit ninth in the Premier League, heading into this weekend’s trip to face Hull City.
