The Frenchman produced fantastic form whilst working under Claude Puel at Nice last season, bagging three assists in 33 Ligue 1 appearances whilst averaging 3.6 tackles, 3.1 interceptions and one created chance per match.
But the 27-year-old’s contract at Allianz Riviera expired at the end of last season, meaning he’s been available on a free transfer since the start of July.
Last month, reports emerged claiming Puel was in the market for an attacking right-back capable of providing a more offensive alternative to resident no.2 Cedric Soares.
And in Pied, who also worked under Puel at Lyon, the Southampton boss has certainly got his man, having begun his career as a winger before making the transition to the backline.
The former France U21 has signed a two-year contract at St. Mary’s, tying him down until the end of next season.
Upon putting pen to paper, Pied said; “I am very happy to be able to join this new team. I’m very proud. The English league is a very attractive one and it was a goal of mine to be able to play in it.
“I’m now very happy to join Southampton. You only have to look at the facilities and their results over the last few seasons to know that this is a very good Premier League club.”
