A majority of Southampton fans are willing to sacrifice James Ward-Prowse in a January swap deal to land Watford striker Andre Gray.

Ward-Prowse is a Southampton academy graduate and has made 214 senior appearances for the Saints, but is struggling to warrant a regular place in the Premier League side's current starting XI.

Before Mark Hughes was sacked, the 24-year-old had started just the single league match but has recorded a further three call-ups under the leadership of Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The midfielder, who can play on the right or centrally, instantly rewarded his new boss as he registered five key passes against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, but found his own net in Sunday’s defeat to Manchester City.

On the flipside, Gray is struggling to force his way into Javi Gracia’s plans at Watford, with the 27-year-old striker without a start at Vicarage Road since October 6.

The former Burnley forward has drawn together a total of 15 games for the Hornets this season, finding the net three times – a Premier League season best came in 2016/17 when he found the Turf Moor net on nine occasions.

Asked who they thought could be more the valuable option for Hasenhuttl over the remainder of the season, Southampton fans had a clear favourite.

In a recent Football FanCast poll, 60% of Saints fans who voted opted for their club pursuing the Hornets forward in a January swap deal, with Transfermarkt valuing both Gray and Ward-Prowse at £13.5million.
