As reported by The Mirror, Southampton are amongst the Premier League clubs keen to sign Gary Cahill should the centre-back decide to leave Chelsea in January.
The former England international’s current contract with the Blues expires at the end of the season, at which point he will become a free agent. However, he may seek to force through a Stamford Bridge exit in the winter window in a bid for more regular first team football.
The Saints would be wise to capitalise upon this situation and secure the 32-year-old’s services. Mark Hughes’ rearguard could certainly benefit greatly from the addition of such an experienced, authoritative and talented figure, and he would likely oust the shaky Wesley Hoedt from the starting XI.
If the south coast club are to avoid relegation from the top flight this season then they’ll need all the help that they can get and Cahill’s arrival would certainly go a long way towards bolstering the squad’s defensive strength in depth.
Saints fans certainly seem keen on signing Cahill too. 80% of those we asked said they’d love to see the club secure his services in January. See the full results below.
