Sofiane Boufal’s Southampton career thus far can be described as relentlessly frustrating. Arriving with a reputation as the next Eden Hazard, the five-cap Moroccan has only ever shown his immense technical ability in short doses for the south coast side, seemingly uncertain of how to translate it into consistently impressive form.
But the 24-year-old winger did show a few signs against Wigan in the FA Cup on Sunday to suggest he could be an important player in the remainder of Southampton’s survival bid, especially now with Mark Hughes at the helm.
The Welshman gained a reputation for getting the best of mercurial talents at Stoke City, namely Marko Arnautovic and Xherdan Shaqiri, and Boufal falls neatly into that bracket as well.
With that in mind, we recently asked Southampton fans whether Hughes is the right man to get the best out of the former Lille talisman and the response was a resounding yes, with 83% believing the new gaffer will help Boufal realise his potential.
Only time will tell whether that prediction proves true.
