Southampton came dangerously close to relegation last season, finishing 2017/18 just 3 points above the drop zone in 17th place.
After being appointed in March following the sacking of Mauricio Pellegrino, Hughes led Saints to the FA Cup semi-final and secured Premier League safety, despite only winning nine points from 10 matches.
Having signed a new three-year deal this summer, Hughes will no doubt be looking to add to his squad on the south coast to ensure a more successful campaign next time out.
Here’s how Southampton fans responded to our poll on who they thought should be recruited this summer…
Fulham’s 18-year-old wonderkid burst onto the scene two seasons ago now. However it was last season that he grabbed all the headlines. Moving to left-wing for The Cottagers, Sessegnon bagged 15 goals and provided six assists in 46 league games as he helped the West London side to promotion via the playoffs.
Unfortunately for Saints fans, Sessegnon is valued at €25m by Transfermarkt and may well want to spend a season in the Prem with his boyhood club before he thinks about leaving for pastures new.
The Stoke Sentinal has reported that the pocket-sized Swiss international has a release clause of around £13.5m, a relative bargain for a tricky, 26-year-old winger in today’s market.
Shaqiri still managed to impress last season as Stoke were relegated, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists in 36 Premier League games.
However, The Daily Express have reported that Shaqiri is set to sign for Liverpool and the deal is all but done. One wonders whether the Reds are simply cutting out the middle man this time after their recent dealings with Saints.
According to Sky Sports, Southampton had a £25m bid for Promes rejected in the January transfer window earlier this year and it would seem from our poll as though Saints fans are still keen for their club to sign the Dutchman this summer.
Saints would most likely have to break their club-record fee (currently £19.1m for Guido Carrillo) in order to sign the Spartak Moscow man. A pacey left-winger, Promes scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in 26 league matches last season.
