Iconic former Southampton striker Rickie Lambert has been discussing the challenge the Saints currently face to stay in the Premier League.

What he said

Speaking to the Daily Echo, 36-year-old Lambert has talked up the quality of his former teammate.

In order for the south coast club to achieve top flight survival this season, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side must be at their absolute best for the rest of the campaign. The Austrian coach desperately needs his most talented players to rise to this challenge.

In this era of 'big 6' dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below...

Lambert clearly believes that Ward-Prowse is amongst the finest players currently on the books at St Mary’s Stadium, telling the Daily Echo: “Prowsey is one of the best, if not the best, set-piece takers and strikers of a ball I’ve come across…With his technique he should be scoring at least five to ten goals a season.”

Considering Lambert played alongside the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Steven Gerrard in his time at Liverpool, that is quite the commendation.

A big role to play

Ward-Prowse has been revitalised by the arrival of Hasenuttl. The 24-year-old midfielder has been in fine form recently, racking up three goals in his last five Premier League games, as per Transfermarkt’s stats.

If the once-capped England international can keep that kind of form up then he could play a huge role in the Saints’ survival. Lambert certainly seems to believe he has what it takes to do just that.
