Dan Sheldon of The Daily Echo has provided an update on the future of Oriol Romeu, who has been the subject of rumours linking him with a move to La Liga side Celta Vigo.

What's the word, then?

Well, Spanish news outlet AS reported that a fee of around €10m (£8.5m) had been agreed between Southampton and Celta Vigo, and all that was preventing an agreement was the payment method of the deal.

However, Sheldon has now poured cold water on those claims by reporting that the Saints do not want to sanction the former Barcelona and Chelsea man's exit, for they do not want to leave themselves short in midfield - similar to Ralph Hasenhuttl's stance on Che Adams.

Romeu has made 12 Premier League starts this season, although he has found himself out of the starting XI recently as James Ward-Prowse and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg occupy the two midfield slots - the Spaniard hasn't started a league game since the 2-1 defeat to Everton in November.

Sensible from Southampton

This is a sensible decision from Southampton, with all things considered.

Behind Højbjerg and Ward-Prowse, Hasenhuttl doesn't have a wealth of midfield options.

The former RB Leipzig boss has Romeu as an option, although behind the 28-year-old, only Stuart Armstrong could maybe fill in for Ward-Prowse and Højbjerg - even then, the Scotland international has been playing on the right for most of this season, making seven appearances in that area.

When those options are assessed, then only academy pair Will Smallbone and Callum Slattery could come into Hasenhuttl's thinking as cover for his first-choice duo, although the young pair are vastly inexperienced - Smallbone did start, and score, in the recent FA Cup win over Huddersfield, however.

Call yourself a Premier League expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

With survival still not secured, it is a wise stance from the club to keep a valuable squad player on board - Hasenhuttl has made a sensible decision on this occasion.
