Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after Daniel Sheldon of The Daily Echo revealed that an exit for Oriol Romeu seems unlikely this month.

The Spaniard had been linked with a move to Celta Vigo, with AS even reporting that a fee of around €10m (£8.5m) for the former Chelsea man had already been agreed, and the only thing holding up an agreement was the payment method.

However, Sheldon reports that the former Barcelona midfielder won't be going anywhere as Ralph Hasenhuttl does not want to leave himself short in midfield, similar to the Austrian's stance on Che Adams amid interest from Leeds.

Romeu has started 12 Premier League games this season, although he has been out of the XI recently as James Ward-Prowse and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg occupy the two centre-midfield slots and to good effect - the Saints have won four and drawn one of their last six league outings.

The 28-year-old hasn't started a Premier League game since the 2-1 defeat to Everton back in November.

Let's see how the Southampton fans on Twitter reacted to The Daily Echo's update...

These two supporters kicked off the reaction by saying it was "good news" although 'Chicago - SaintsFC' added "for those worried Romeu is leaving".

However, the same supporter also mentioned that they think the current campaign will be Romeu's last season at St Mary's, saying that they're "not sure he fits in Ralph's plans".

Elsewhere, Stuart Hack felt that there was "no chance in recalling Harrison Reed" following Sheldon's update - the Southampton academy graduate is currently out on a season-long loan at Fulham.

Meanwhile, these two fans had contrasting views on the Romeu news.

One supporter named Andrew simply said that it was "sensible" from the club, although Ewan seemed to state that "it's not the end of the world if we do lose Romeu" although apparently missed out the word "world" - his point still makes sense, however.

Lastly, Lee Myers proved that he's well and truly on top of things at Southampton by revealing that he thought the midfielder had already left St Mary's - keep up Lee!
