Many Southampton fans have been reacting on Twitter after Sky Sports reported that they have been offered the chance to sign Lyon right-back Rafael da Silva this month.

Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has already said that his January transfer window priority is to strengthen in the full-back areas, with little strong competition for the likes of Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares.

Sky Sports report that the Austrian wants a new right-back, and that the Ligue 1 outfit are willing to sell the 29-year-old Brazilian before the deadline.

Rafael has made 129 appearances in all competitions for Lyon following his move from Manchester United in 2015, although only nine of those have come this term as he has fallen out of favour.

While Hasenhuttl may want a new addition in this position, it appears as though plenty of Saints supporters replying to a thread citing the report aren't exactly enamoured about bringing a player once signed by Sir Alex Ferguson to St Mary's.

One said they "would rather have Cuco Martina back" following his relatively unsuccessful spell with the club in which he made 36 appearances across two seasons before joining Everton, while another said he makes Cedric Soares look good.

Given the fact he turns 30 years of age this summer and clearly isn't one for the future, this is an understandable viewpoint given he surely wouldn't be happy to play back-up to Cedric, who has come under plenty of criticism for his performances this term.

Not everyone thinks Rafael would be an underwhelming signing however, with one fan highlighting the fact he knows the Premier League - he made 109 appearances for United in it - and the general experience he has.

With 40 Champions League outings to his name throughout his career, it is difficult to argue with that sentiment and perhaps he would be a good short-term addition if the price was right.
