Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster made his first pre-season appearance in the 3-3 draw against Schalke in China on Thursday, and some Southampton fans were left unimpressed with what they witnessed from the 30-year-old, rated at £13.5m by Transfermarkt.
The stopper had been Saints’ first-choice between the sticks for a number of years and only signed a new five-year contract last summer, but poor performances in the first half of the 2017/18 campaign saw him lose his place to Alex McCarthy prior to the New Year, and he has failed to win it back since.
The England international came on at half-time against the Bundesliga outfit on Thursday, but he was beaten by two long-range strikes – one of which he perhaps should have done better with at least – and the St Mary’s faithful were seemingly not happy.
Some Southampton supporters, who could see manager Mark Hughes make two big signings and sanction one major exit, were quick to have their say on Forster’s display via social media, and while one said “lead-footed flapping around as usual”, another said “Forster needs to go”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
Annnnnnd that right there is why Forster is 2nd choice. Good strike or not, that dive was slower than the second coming #saintsfc

After today, I think Hughes will be even more determined to offload Forster… I know its a friendly but imagine he does this in a PL game, can't be having that. Schalke have seen how weak he is and are taking pops from distance. #SaintsFC

Oh dear! I honestly think Forster’s days are numbered. #SaintsFC
