You could argue that there are quite a few problems at Southampton right now.

The team isn't doing too well after losing their last three Premier League games on the bounce.

Angus Gunn and James Ward-Prowse - two regular starters under Ralph Hasenhuttl - have been performing below par and must step up.

Meanwhile, £15m summer signing Che Adams still hasn't found the back of the net in eight appearances.

However, amid all of this and the exit of Director of Football Ross Wilson, the Saints appear to have pinpointed what they feel is their main problem.

In The Daily Echo's confirmation of Wilson's move to Rangers, Adam Leitch writes that the south coast side will specifically look to appoint a Player Trading Expert - that in itself is telling enough.

"The Daily Echo understands that Saints are comfortable with the structure they have and the personnel leading the other areas of the club, but feel they need a proven expert in player trading."

As is pretty much evident, the only area Southampton aren't happy with is their ability to purchase and sell players effectively.

It is a sensible area to focus on in the immediate aftermath of Wilson's exit, as it was he who was responsible for a number of high-profile transfer flops during his time at St Mary's.

The Director of Football Operations oversaw the £15m arrival of Wesley Hoedt - who now finds himself on loan at Belgian side Royal Antwerp - as well as the club-record £19m capture of Guido Carrillo in 2018, a man who is yet to even score a goal for the club.

Wilson's successes in the transfer market were few and far between, with only Virgil van Dijk and Moussa Djenepo proving to be astute signings - one was sold for £75m having only cost £13m, while another has two goals in his first three Premier League appearances.

However, things have not been good enough on the player recruitment side of things in recent years at St Mary's, so it feels like a sensible, measured decision to begin the post-Wilson era by targeting a Player Trading Expert.

Pinpointing the main problem is a start, at least.
