The Saints enter their clash with the London club ahead on goal difference and in high spirits following a win against their foes away in the Capital One Cup earlier this term.
Southampton have been one of the season’s surprise packages, with Koeman himself new to the Premier League.
The Dutchman replaced Mauricio Pochettino on the South Coast and promptly lost a host of the club’s star players, including now Liverpool trio Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert and captain Adam Lallana.
However, they are currently on course to finish in the Champions League qualification spots at the midway point, and Koeman is hopeful that they can pip Arsenal:
“I believe still that we can fight for a top place in the league.” He is quoted by BBC Sport.
“We are now halfway through the season and we have played all the teams,”
“Maybe it was unrealistic before the season, and maybe that has changed a little bit with how we have played up until now.
“The Premier League really is a strong competition and they have to play Champions League again after February or March.
“That means a lot of games for them and it is a challenge to keep the physical freshness in the competition. Maybe we will come and surprise people.”
