Ralph Hasenhuttl has praised young Southampton left-back Jake Vokins after he scored on his debut in the FA Cup on Saturday, per Yahoo Sports.

What’s he said?

The Saints ran out 2-0 winners over Huddersfield Town to progress to the fourth round.

Two academy products proved decisive, with Will Smallbone scoring the first goal before Vokins’ excellent late strike from range.

And Hasenhuttl had some kind words for the 19-year-old defender after the game, insisting that the club will do all they can to help him reach his full potential.

He said: “Jake showed exactly what I know from him. He has some good moves and is very forward orientated.

“I think the reverse gear takes longer. It is up to us to work with him and make him better.”

Clever words

This is good from Hasenhuttl.

Vokins may be an England youth international who has plenty of minutes under his belt for the youth teams – he has made 55 appearances for the U23s – but patience is key when it comes to young players.

Hasenhuttl clearly knows this and is not attempting to pile the pressure on the young full-back.

It seems likely that he will get minutes in the first-team in the coming months but there does not appear to be too much hype surrounding him from his manager.

That, though, is not a bad thing; it allows him the freedom to develop away from the glare of the spotlight and potentially sneak his way into starting contention.

Meanwhile, a Southampton target has joined Italian giants Juventus instead.
