‘Concrete Ron’ shone at the World Cup earlier this summer, leading to speculation that he could be destined for a big switch away from the Midlands – with Manchester United’s Louis van Gaal rumoured to be interested.
But the Saints are also in the running, with Koeman desperate to replace defensive leader Dejan Lovren.
Vlaar is seen as the ideal man to add presence and authority to the South Coast outfit’s rearguard to help out in what looks likely to be tough campaign for them following the sales of a number of big name stars.
Koeman coached the 29-year-old during his spell at Feyenoord and says that he “would really like” the chance to work with him again:
“Vlaar became one of the best Oranje defenders for us at Feyenoord,” he is quoted by The Metro. “And since the last World Cup he became one of the best of the tournament.
“He’s a perfect addition to every group and a real leader. I would really like to have him at Southampton.”
