Southampton chasing Celtic’s defensive rock

Southampton are still in the hunt to bring Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk to the Premier League, according to the Daily Mail.

The article claims that Saints club scouts were in attendance at Park Head to monitor the defenders’ progress during the Scottish Premier League side’s 3-3 draw with Inter Milan in last Thursday’s Europa League game.

It is believed that Celtic have set a valuation of around £10million, after both Sunderland and Everton were quoted this price following inquiries made during the January transfer window.

It’s not surprising that Southampton are interested in signing another defender given the fact that Toby Alderweireld is only loan from Atletico Madrid.

The Mail believes that Saints manager Ronald Koeman would like the player to stay at St Mary’s but isn’t too hopeful of this coming to fruition due to the interest been shown by Premier League champions Manchester City.
