Southampton chief aims to keep star men

Southampton manager Mauricio PochettinoSouthampton fans have been assured by Mauricio Pochettino that the club will not be selling their key players this summer.

The Saints’ chief has enjoyed a successful half-season at St Mary’s since replacing Nigel Adkins in the hot seat in the middle of January having guided the club to Premier League safety.

Pochettino’s tenure has included big wins against Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea in which some Saints’ players have subsequently attracted the interests of the Premier League’s big boys.

However, while the Argentinian tactician was used to selling his star players during his time in charge of Spanish outfit Espanyol, he is adamant that will not be the case at Southampton.

“I think there is a clear path that we want to be on,” he said. “It is clear the club that I am at wants to keep growing and move forward and it has shown just that by getting new contracts to some very important players in the club.”

Pochettino also hailed the fans who have taken to him despite being initially unhappy with the way the club axed Adkins.

He added: “We are very happy [to be safe]. The players have put in an amazing performance in the four months that I’ve been here. That’s the work I can do, I can’t speak previous to when I arrived.

“I’m very happy in the club, I’m very happy at Southampton in the city, I’m very happy with the supporters.

“I want to congratulate them and thank them because they’ve treated me very kindly, so overall I’m delighted to be here.”
