Saturday was a day of regrets for Southampton after they failed to pick up all three points away to Everton in the English Premier League.
Leading 1-0 heading in the final 10 minutes of the match, defender Maya Yoshida was sent off before dreadful defending resulted in a stoppage time equaliser from Tom Davies.
The result could be crucial in Saints’ battle to beat the drop to the English Championship, although the draw did mean they move out of the relegation zone on goal difference.
They now face a mammoth match against Swansea City on Tuesday night with the winner taking a massive step towards safety.
Much of the criticism around the equalising goal was aimed at Ryan Bertrand, who inexplicably kept a ball that was heading out, in-play, before losing possession that led to Davies’ deflected shot.
Had he let the ball go out for a throw in it would have allowed his side to regroup and perhaps see out the match as winners.
Fans took to Twitter to discuss the incident, failing to understand how it could happen…
Bertrand is an experienced footballer….why didn’t he just put the ball out for a throw?! 😡#saintsfc

Blame the officials all you like but that was one of the worst clearances I’ve ever seen down the line from Bertrand to gift the ball back to them at the end. Individual errors again. Good performance but not enough to stay up, unless we win Tuesday #saintsfc

Not fully blaming him but Bertrand lacked any footballing brain with that clearance straight to them. No idea what he was thinking #Saintsfc

Bertrand is an experienced pro, should have let it go out. To be fair at the end, camera was on Bertie and you could see he knew, Jon Moss aside, it was his fault #saintsfc

What was bertrand doing!? Let it go out #SaintsFC

I’ve suffered a lot of late goals in my #Saintsfc days, but that felt like one of the cruellest. Dreadful clearance by Bertrand straight back to them though.

Why did Bertrand do that??? Row Z and we would have won!!!!! #SaintsFC

#SaintsFC simply not good enough from Bertrand. A captain has to have his head screwed on and put that into the stands.

Why is Bertrand a full international, champions league winner, trying to keep the ball in play when the defence is all at sea? Concede throw in & restock. Flabbergasted. #SaintsFC
