Southampton fans desperate for Hughes to be given new contract

Mark Hughes had an incredibly difficult job on his hands when he became Southampton manager in March.

The club’s previous coach Mauricio Pellegrino oversaw the Saints drift towards the relegation zone, and it was Hughes’s job to help them claw out of it.

It was a hugely tense evening at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday night as the coastal club went head to head with Swansea City.

Both headed into the contest knowing that the winner would likely retain their Premier League status.

It was a tight affair, and there was only one goal in it, but it swung in Southampton’s favour.

Manolo Gabbiadini was the scorer as he struck in the 72nd minute to move the club out of the bottom three.

Southampton have all but secured safety in the top flight ahead of their final-day clash against champions Manchester City.

Amid the euphoria, supporters took to Twitter to urge the club to offer Hughes a new deal.
