According to The Mirror, Southampton have moved into a strong position to sign Stoke City attacker Xherdan Shaqiri in this summer’s transfer window.
Shaqiri will leave Stoke City following their relegation from the Premier League, and a number of top-flight clubs have been linked with the Swiss international.
However, according to The Mirror, Southampton are ready to activate Shaqiri’s £12m release clause as Saints boss Mark Hughes, who brought the attacker to England, prepares for a reunion.
Shaqiri scored eight times and registered seven assists in 36 Premier League appearances for Stoke during the 2017-18 campaign.
And it is not a surprise that so many teams are interested in the former Bayern Munich attacker.
It appears that Southampton are in a strong position to get the deal done though, and the club’s supporters have been reacting to the transfer report.
To put it plainly, the Southampton fans are desperate for the deal to go through.
A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:
12m for a player of his calibre would be an absolute steal. He’d ease the pressure upon Tadic to unlock defences and provide more support to the forwards. A no brainer for me and I’d love to see him at St Mary’s #saintsfc

Yes yes…A great addition, a real international quality player! More consistent than Tadjic, but happy to have them both!

That’s a great signing!

Like it! Creative player on the right side would fit well with deliveries to Austin or Gabbiadini. How many times has Gabbiadini made great runs and we haven’t had anyone who sees it or can deliver the killer pass! ⚽️?

No brainer get him in

Yep definitely…not sure if you could play him and Tadic in the team. Both have the ability…but also the ability to go missing
