Lots of Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to discuss Jan Bednarek’s form, after WhoScored highlighted a particularly concerning statistic.
The 23-year-old has committed more errors leading to goals that any other outfield player in Europe’s top five leagues this season, with the Poland international making three costly mistakes.
While that stat sounds like a worrying one, it hasn’t stopped Ralph Hasenhuttl starting the 6 foot 2 centre-back in all eight of the Saints’ Premier League games this term.
It also hasn’t led to Southampton fans below jumping on his back, quite the contrary in fact.
One supporter said that Bednarek’s style is a “joy to watch”, while another called him the best defender at the club.
However, another said that he gets away with it as he is the “best of a bad bunch”, whereas another feels confused as to why the youngster is exempt from criticism at times.
Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction…
Bednarek is clearly still developing and has great potential, but I’m confused as to why he seems to be exempt from criticism and/or selection questions, when other #saintsfc players have had much harsher treatment. https://t.co/x0TK1WyWR1

He gets away with it, probably because he’s the best of a bad bunch.

He had also made a number of key tackles and interceptions. Were they because he was out of position or messed up first time? I don’t know. I good same could be said for Vestergard.

Me and my friend had a similar discussion. Ultimately I think it comes down to effort and commitment. Same applies with Yoshi, not the most talented but boy does he try. That’s all I ask for and for me Bednerak does that .)

I think it’s because his game is to be the stopper, step out of defence early and make the tackle/win the header. It’s a joy to watch, but naturally comes with a few mistakes

He’s our best defender

You cannot judge him based on that one stat. Doesn’t give an overall view of his play.
