Southampton fans feel miserable following Elia throwback tweet

Southampton are facing quite the predicament as we enter the final few months of the season.

If the campaign ended today, Mauricio Pellegrino’s men would retain their Premier League status, but only by a whisker.

The club are one point above the relegation zone with nine games left to play and they have only managed to win five of their 29 matches.

Pellegrino has been criticised throughout the season for his tactics and formations, which has led many fans to call for the manager’s dismissal.

On Saturday, the coastal club will take on Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Ahead of the match, the club’s social media team wound the clock back to 2015 when the team defeated the Magpies 2-1 at on away soil.

Eljero Elia was the unlikely hero as he netted both goals to give Southampton all three points.

The winger had a short spell with the Saints on a loan deal from Werder Bremen, where he spent three years before signing for Feyenoord in 2015.

While some fans enjoyed the throwback, others just saw it as a reminder of how far the club have fallen since.
