Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl handed a Premier League debut to Angus Gunn in Wednesday night’s clash with Chelsea.
Hasenhuttl made eight changes to the side that started the 3-1 loss to Manchester City last time out, and one of those introduced was Gunn.
The 22-year-old, who cost the Saints £10m from Man City during the summer, has had to be patient this season, but will now take some displacing following an excellent performance at Stamford Bridge.
Indeed, Gunn helped his side keep a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw. The Blues had eight attempts on target, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Eyebrows were raised when Southampton signed Gunn when considering the goalkeeping options at St Mary’s.
However, the Englishman put in a strong performance on Wednesday night.
It is safe to say that the Southampton fans were delighted with Gunn’s performance, and many took to social media in the aftermath of the goalless draw:
Granted Gunn wasn’t peppered with shots but what he had to do, he done very well. His distribution was much better aswell IMO. Called for Gunn for a while so delighted he took his chance, well done to Ralph too for doing it in a PL game, not a cup game. #saintsfc

FANTASTIC defensive display. Angus Gunn was phenomenal between the sticks today making several important saves. Valery was great defensively clearing everything up. Vestergaard, Yoshi and Bednarek were a rock. What a performance! Bring on 2019! #SaintsFC ?⚪?⚪

Valery brilliant once again. Kept Hazard quiet and dealt with almost everything perfectly. An upgrade on Cedric at right-back and he offers defensive physicality.
Gunn also impressive, hopefully we’ll see more from him this season.
Long needs to go.#SaintsFC
