Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to mock the Premier League's request for the club to wear a different strip for the game against Newcastle this weekend, in an attempt to avoid any colour clashes.

The Saints already have three different strips for the 2019/20 campaign, including a red and white home shirt, a black and yellow away shirt and a grey and black third shirt, although the Premier League do not feel that any of these are different enough to Newcastle's white and black home kit.

As a result, Southampton have been forced to wear last season's all-red third shirt for this weekend's trip to St James' Park, an incident that some supporters on Twitter have found quite amusing.

In fairness, it is quite a baffling situation. Surely Southampton's red and white strip would be fine, given the fact that Sunderland have gone head to head with the Magpies in Tyne-Wear derby matches before while wearing red and white.

These two supporters here decided to make fun of the fact that the Saints have three different kits, and not a single one of them are suitable to wear against Newcastle, whereas another fan below the pair asked how this problem wasn't considered when the original strips were designed ahead of the current campaign.

This supporter echoed the point that had previously been mentioned, stating that surely red and white wouldn't cause issues against black and white.

Another fan reiterated what was said earlier in the article too, highlighting the fact that Sunderland almost always played in their red and white home shirt when visiting Tyneside.

Lastly, this supporter was seemingly laughing at the fact that last season's third kit was simply dusted off and brought back into action following the Premier League's request.
