Southampton fans rage at Yoshida after late red card proves costly

Southampton had a crucial victory snatched from their grasp in the sixth minute of injury time on Saturday, drawing 1-1 away to Everton in the English Premier League.

While the draw has moved them out of the relegation zone on goal difference, they were so close to going two points clear of Swansea City before Tom Davies’ dramatic stoppage time leveller.

That came after Nathan Redmond scored his first goal of the season to put Mark Hughes side ahead.

It sets up a mammoth match against the Swans on Tuesday night, with a victors on the night very likely to avoid the drop to the Championship.

While the point was a welcome one for supporters, they were left frustrated with the manner in which they conceded.

Much of the criticism was aimed at defender Maya Yoshida, who was sent off in the 85th minute after a clumsy challenge resulted in his second yellow card. It left Saints with ten men for ten minutes when factoring in stoppage time.

Fans raged at Japanese international during and after the game, believing the sending off invited pressure on their defence and played a critical role in dropping two points.
