Southampton had a crucial victory snatched from their grasp in the sixth minute of injury time on Saturday, drawing 1-1 away to Everton in the English Premier League.
While the draw has moved them out of the relegation zone on goal difference, they were so close to going two points clear of Swansea City before Tom Davies’ dramatic stoppage time leveller.
That came after Nathan Redmond scored his first goal of the season to put Mark Hughes side ahead.
It sets up a mammoth match against the Swans on Tuesday night, with a victors on the night very likely to avoid the drop to the Championship.
While the point was a welcome one for supporters, they were left frustrated with the manner in which they conceded.
Much of the criticism was aimed at defender Maya Yoshida, who was sent off in the 85th minute after a clumsy challenge resulted in his second yellow card. It left Saints with ten men for ten minutes when factoring in stoppage time.
Fans raged at Japanese international during and after the game, believing the sending off invited pressure on their defence and played a critical role in dropping two points.
They took to Twitter to share their thoughts…
Well the question has to be said what the hell did Yoshida think he was doing when he was already on a yellow card? The bloke is a liability but saying that our whole defence is a joke! Can’t say we don’t deserve to go down looking at the season as a whole #saintsfc

I would’ve taken a point before game but devastated now! Thankfully only a 6 hour coach journey back to stew over. Appreciate ref was terrible but Yoshida needs to look at himself, leaving us short for critical part of game #SaintsFC #Gutted

Hopefully that’s the last time we see Yoshida in a #Saintsfc shirt 🤡

That red card from Yoshida is unforgivable-both his yellows were shocking defending. Totally changed the momentum and has done so much damage, invites pressure th wasn’t there 😢 #saintsfc

Yoshida is going to get the bollocking of a lifetime in that dressing room…. most experienced player in our team and he does that…. #SaintsFC

At least we won’t have to see Yoshida in a #saintsfc shirt again. Could have cost us our prem status today…

Yoshida has just let himself and everyone else down there, really poor judgement #SaintsFC

Yoshida is one of the worst players I've ever seen for #SaintsFC aswell btw, yes he gives his all…. because he knows he should be nowhere near this level

I think Cédric’s injury added on more time, Bertrand’s clearance was shocking in the lead up to the goal. Yoshida is a massive idiot. #saintsfc
