According to BBC Sport, Southampton are closing in on the signing of Stuart Armstrong from Celtic for an initial £7m fee, and Saints fans have been quick to have their say on the news.
Having only narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship last term it was clear that Mark Hughes needed to strengthen his squad this summer, and one of his priorities would have been to add some goal to his team after they only netted 37 in their 38 Premier League matches last term.
Armstrong certainly fits the bill in that respect after scoring 28 goals and providing a further 25 assists in 144 Celtic appearances, and he would be following a well-stepped path with the south coast outfit previously buying Fraser Forster, Victor Wanyama and Virgil van Dijk from the Scottish Premiership champions.
Southampton supporters, who have named two players who shouldn’t replace Ajax-bound Dusan Tadic, have taken to social media to give their thoughts on the move, and while one said the deal “reeks of no ambition”, another said he “could be the No.10 we need”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
Armstrong had an excellent season last year racking up 17 goals and 8 assists, this season he’s been unlucky with injury and still got a respectable tally, can’t imagine he’s Tadic’s replacement but could be the No.10 we need, buying from Celtic normally works #saintsfc

From what I’ve read, Armstrong looks like a much needed replacement of Steven Davis rather than a critical replacement of Dusan Tadic. Great signing nonetheless if it happens. #SaintsFC https://t.co/eQrCEjcqQa

Stuart Armstrong is a good signing for us £7M looks like a bit of a bargain for a goal scoring midfielder #saintsfc

we are due a massive squad overhaul but I cant help but think we want to do it on the cheap. Armstrong is a good singing at £7m but another central midfielder is the last thing we need. A solid centre half, a pacey winger and a reliable goal scorer. We have none of that #saintsfc

Sorry, but Stuart Armstrong doesn't excite me at all. Linked with Promes, Shaqiri etc then end up with Armstrong is poor. #saintsfc

#saintsfc another season close to the relegation zone threatens with signings like Armstrong. Wreaks of no ambition, cheap signing…
Club haven’t learned anything from last season again. Mugging the fans off yet again. #noambition

Armstrong: good value at £7m, can chip in with a goal, decent engine, nice hair. I can understand anxiety after the Tadic news but the fact #saintsfc have been linked to him for at least two consecutive summers suggests some planning, probably with a view to Davis's aging legs.

Think he’ll be the Davis replacement- for £7m can’t really complain.
