Southampton fans react as club offered chance to sign NY Red Bulls star Aaron Long

Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was reported by Sky Sports that the Saints have been offered the chance to sign New York Red Bulls centre-back Aaron Long.

The USA international – who has won 14 caps for his country – almost joined West Ham back in the summer although the Hammers were unable to do a deal due to Long’s inability to secure a work permit.

Such an issue will no longer be a problem, as the 27-year-old has now qualified for a work permit having earned more international caps since then.

French giants Marseille are also interested in the 6 foot 1 defender this January, who has a $6m (£4.6m) release clause in his contract with the New York-based side.

Would Aaron Long be a good signing for Southampton?

One fan asked if Long could play left-back and right-back, whereas another questioned if Ralph Hasenhuttl would want to sign a 27-year-old.
