According to reports in The Telegraph, Southampton manager Mark Hughes could be hit with an FA charge following his post-match comments about referee Jon Moss after the 1-1 draw against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday, and Saints fans have been quick to react.
The 54-year-old was furious about a couple of decisions late on in the match on Merseyside – including the Toffees’ equaliser which came more than a minute after the original four minutes of allotted injury time – and his words could certainly be construed as mockery of the official.
According to The Telegraph, Hughes said: “The assistant referee is about two or three yards away and clearly sees it isn’t a foul but Jon Moss, as he usually is about 30 yards behind play, decided to give a free-kick.”
Southampton supporters, who were furious with stand-in captain Ryan Bertrand on Saturday, took to social media to give their thoughts on the rumour, and while one labelled it as “astounding”, another said “and this is why it’s pathetic”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
Not allowed to question referees' they are untouchable as well as incompetent. Not an easy job but they can't even do the simple things atm.

FA demonstrating they aren’t fit for purpose. Again.

And this is why it’s pathetic – he’s clearly going to be annoyed at the decision (s) he says so gets a ban or a fine – moss will get nothing for being inept – FA penalising the wrong person

Im glad they are.. this way they can see how the officials got in wrong.. including the ball that was clearly over the line with lino staring right at it!

Well that's good. The facts are the facts…linesman didn't see anything, Moss had an obscured view and blew up and having made such a flimsy decision didn't see fit to make sure that the free kick was taken from the correct area. It's all on TV so MH should be laughing.

How about Jon Moss facing punishment for terrible refereeing?
— Harry (@NadaIesque) May 6, 2018
How can he be punished for an accurate assessment of an incompetent ref who should be suspended for those mistakes which we suffered for.

Only 1 person who should be punish and that John moss.fa your a joke

Astounding, really. Moss is always behind the play, he does make strings of mistakes, and Hughes is absolutely correct to feel aggrieved by his lack of professionalism yesterday. Yet the FA make him untouchable and immune from criticism. https://t.co/DbToTXbOmH
