Southampton fans react as Michael Obafemi signs new deal until 2022

Southampton confirmed on their official website on Wednesday that they had agreed a new three-and-half year contract with teenage striker Michael Obafemi, and Saints fans were quick to react to the news on Twitter.

The 18-year-old made his Premier League debut for the south coast outfit last season but failed to make his first appearance in the top flight this term until a substitute outing in the 6-1 defeat against Manchester City in November – when Mark Hughes was still at the helm.

The Republic of Ireland international followed up the showing against Pep Guardiola’s side with four further appearances – scoring his first goal for the first team in the latter against Huddersfield Town, the only game he has been available for since Ralph Hasenhuttl was appointed – before picking up a hamstring issue that has kept him on the sidelines since Christmas.

Southampton supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the youngster committing his future to the club, and while one said it’s the “best thing we’ve done in years”, another said “now for the love of god start him over Long”.
