Southampton announced on Wednesday that the club’s multi-billion pound sponsor Virgin Media would be subsidising away tickets for the club’s travels to Newcastle United and Chelsea.

The games selected will be played on April 20 and January 2 respectively with fans able to purchase tickets at £20 rather than the league-mandated £30-cap for away fans.

Virgin and the south coast side have previously teamed up to offer supporters cheaper matchday tickets, most recently with away fans attending Saints home matches.

In Wednesday’s announcement, the club confirmed that the away discount for fans attending fixtures at St Mary’s Stadium would be stopping, however, as the two parties look into further fan initiatives targeted towards home supporters.

The timing of the offer comes as Mark Hughes continues in charge of a side just a goal outside the relegation zone after 12 games, tied on points with Cardiff City.
