The Daily Mail reported on January 31 that Southampton are reportedly looking to sign Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes this summer having failed in an attempt to bring him to St Mary’s during the January transfer window, but Saints fans were left unimpressed with his display for the Netherlands in their 1-0 defeat against England in Amsterdam on Friday night.
The south coast outfit were heavily linked with signing the wide man in a club-record deal in January, but no move materialised as they failed with a £25m bid, with the St Mary’s faithful that had been excited about the rumour left disappointed.
The 26-year-old started in a three-man attack alongside Memphis Depay and Bas Dost against the Three Lions on Friday, but he failed to make any kind of impact in the final third for Ronald Koeman’s team before he was replaced by Brighton and Hove Albion’s Davy Propper in the 66th minute.
Southampton supporters were quick to have their say on his display via social media, and while one wrote “glad #saintsfc didn’t buy Quincy Promes”, another said he “looks worse than Redmond”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
Not looking too good tonight… & he's just been subbed! But to be fair, this is a poor game, his pace is what my team needs.
