According to a report in The Mirror, Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is ready to bring forgotten goalkeeper Fraser Forster in from the wilderness, and Saints fans have been quick to react on Twitter.
The 30-year-old was once the south coast outfit’s undoubted number-one choice between the sticks, but a prolonged dip in form saw him replaced by Alex McCarthy at the end of 2017, and he hasn’t played a match for them since despite his contract not due to expire until 2022.
While he sat on the substitutes’ bench as his fellow England international for the remainder of last season, he has been absent from the 18-man squad altogether this term following the arrival of Angus Gunn – who has started the previous two games under Hasenhuttl – from Manchester City during the summer.
Southampton supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the story, and while one said “Jesus, please, no”, another said it “makes no sense at all”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
I’d rather recall boufal and maybe chance carillo

Ok he fell out of form (perhaps to justifiable personal issues if true), but let’s not forget he was immense for a time!

He had better of improved considerably as he was probably the worst keeper I had seen play for the first team

Might be worth it in the hope he puts in a decent performance and encourages someone to come in for him. Surely Gunn will be number 1 for years to come

Jesus, please, no.

Good god! Don’t do it!

I can only assume they think Macca is a more/easier sellable asset (part of creating purchase funds) and AG will be new No1 and FF has come back to prove himself in training.

I think we’re going to be seeing the end of McCarthy soon – all this Forster news as well as Gunn’s recent inclusion seems to be pointing towards a change in the goalkeeping department. I trust Ralph’s judgement, if Fraser has impressed Ralph then he’s impressed me #saintsfc
